I miss the in-person events

Last month (September 2022), I attended my first convention-type gathering since before the pandemic. It was a 3-day conference for the WordPress community in San Diego.

It was a great occasion to get the latest on what’s happening with the most popular web content platform, now powering over 40 percent of websites around the world.

But personally, I have to say it was really great to be able to mingle with people, live and in the same room again.

The opportunity to attend presentations from respected WordPress contributors and creatives was a very nice experience as well.

What I really like about the WordPress community is that it’s always so open and welcoming. Everyone there is out to get something from the event, but also equally willing to share and contribute in any way they can.

This is evident with all the opportunities to network. Personally, I always enjoy the lunches where we all just spontaneously gather around tables and not only meet each other, but launch into conversations around our WordPress-related lives, and whatever happens to be on our minds.

While I found it generally OK to be largely confined to within the walls of my home office the past two years, I also admit it’s hard to know what you miss from gathering in the same room with others – until you get back into an event again.

I really enjoyed myself and all the presentations, and meeting people, at WordCamp US 2022 – the premier conference for the WordPress community. After returning home, there was a tinge of sadness the event had concluded and I was back to my professional life at home.

I can’t wait to attend another WordCamp again, but it’s going to be quite some time before that happens. There are no local WordCamps on the horizon just yet for my area, and the next big WordCamp US isn’t until August 2023 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Unless I have the motivation and wherewithal to trek all the way to Bangkok for WordCamp Asia in February 2023.

Until then, there are the WordPress meetups, which are local but since beginning of the pandemic have been online over Zoom.
